IMPROVED WATER HEATER ACCESS
By Joran Gendell (ELIXIR)
Joran Gendell recently designed and built improved water heater access for his MK-II Yawl, ELIXIR.
IMPROVED ACCESS THROUGH STARBOARD
(Note the water heater shelf as viewed through the access panel.)
Right now I am in the midst of replacing the water heater. First I needed better access. See the attached picture for a view of my enlarged quarterberth access port. Also doing work on steering, compass, and engine controls while I am under the cockpit.
The opening in the bulkhead closes with two pieces. The lower half, semi-fixed, bolts in and comes up 2" above the bunk-board. The upper half lays in and secures with a barrel bolt, much like the original access panels on the port side of the engine. Thus, the upper half can readily be removed for inspections or adjustments while lying on the quarterberth.
Oh, I also added a fixed light fixture on the under-side of the cockpit sole which has proven to be worth it's weight in gold.
