Can't really speak for MK-Is, as some of them have smaller than 1" shafts, which is the common shaft size on the MK-II. Anyway, the "shaft log" on our 1975 MK-II, to which the stuffing box hose is connected (and in turn is screwed into the bronze cutless bearing housing) is a 1-1/4" red brass pipe about 8" long. We have been using the teflon impregnated packing and have NO drips and no overheating with only moderate tension on the packing nuts.
