Nick, On our 1975 yawl, this is the way we've rigged her: 1. The upper shroud goes to the foremost hole in the chainplate. 2.The lower shroud goes from the foremost hole in the plate just under the spreader to the aftmost hole in the chainplate. 3. The running backstays go to the padeyes in the stern corners. Ours were originally set up with Pelican hooks, but we changed it to a block and tackle arrangement. Not sure what you mean by the statement that the "The middle shouds are longer than the others??? ". I have a couple of photos - let me know and I will email them to you. Hope this helps, Tom
