on inclination i use the standard stuffing box but with dripless packing that is available from west marine or most other suppliers. this way you have no water intrusion into the bilge but are still able to repair the shaft seal at sea in an emergency. we had one boat nearly sink when a piece of sand somehow got in between the ceramic seals on one of the dripless stuffing boxes. this is the only failure i'm aware of. if you do have a problem with one, however, i think it unlikely you could repair it at sea.
