i would definitely use the backstay by installing two isolaters, one 3 feet below the top of the mast (closer may result in arcing) and one just above the split backstay. then run yopur hot leasd aslongside the split backstay being sure to use standoffs. for those without a split backstay i would use only one isolator and make the connection in the aft lazzerette (as in the case of my sloop). this avoids all kinds of corrossion problems. this won' t work of course, if your chainplates are bonded. i find the whip asntennaes to be awkward, ugly and not nearly as effective as a backstay. i'm a licensed extras class ham and have done a lot of installations. if you want more info please contact me. kc7-ubb
